In the 2011 edition of the international Ciencia en Acción competition, the first prize in the Teaching Resources category went to the animated video 'Me and my Body', developed and produced by members of the IGC Science Communication Team (Catarina Júlio, Ana Mena and Ana Godinho), in collaboration with Diana Marques (illustrator), Cláudio Silva (Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional) and Alexandre Gil (student).
According to the competition judges, this award acknowledges the video's 'ability to make science attractive to young people, and teach them the concepts of cells and organs of the body, in a very professional and educational fashion'.
The video explores the concept of cells, and the different methods used by scientists in their research. It describes some of the different types of cells in the body, their function, and how this cell diversity underlies the different organs and their functions. The animation also describes how scientific knowledge in biomedicine is acquired and contributes to human health, through the use of in vitro techniques, microscopy and animal research. It was developed with 7-12 year olds in mind, but is equally suited to viewers of all ages.
'Me and my Body' was funded by Casa das Ciências (Portugal), and made possible thanks to technical support (sound recording and editing) from Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN).
