The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), in Portugal, has been ranked as the 8th best international (non-US) institution to work for postdocs, in the 8th annual survey of The Scientist, magazine for the life sciences. The rankings in the Best Places to Work for Postdocs survey are determined by postdocs themselves, working in research institutions across the world. The IGC is the only Portuguese institution in the top 10 for 2010.
According to The Scientist, 'This year's award winners represent an array of forward-thinking institutions that are open to changing in support of the values and needs of its postdocs'. Furthermore, 'Our survey is one of the few in the world to give postdocs a place to voice their concerns. And it highlights the institutions that do the most to nurture talented fellows.'
The IGC Director, Antonio Coutinho, voices the satisfaction of the whole institute, 'This award is recognition of the mission of the IGC to welcome, host and nurture future scientific leaders, from PhD students, to postdocs, fellows and young group leaders, in an atmosphere of cooperativity and mutual trust, fostering intellectual autonomy and institutional responsibility, in the pursuit of scientific excellence'.
